Our High-Purity Magnesia Cupels are specialized refractory crucibles meticulously engineered for the fire assay (cupellation) process. They serve as the critical final vessel for separating precious metals (Gold and Silver) from base metals (primarily Lead) in metallurgical and geological laboratories.

Magnesia Cupel  Points

During the cupellation process, a lead button (containing the sample and precious metals) is placed inside the hot magnesia cupel. As the temperature rises, the lead oxidizes. The liquid lead oxide is rapidly wicked away into the pores of the cupel via capillary action. Since gold and silver do not oxidize at these temperatures, they remain as a solid metallic globule on the surface of the cupel
