The microporous ceramic frit used in reference electrodes is essentially a precision liquid junction component. It serves as the ionic conduction bridge between the internal filling solution of the reference electrode and the test solution. Its performance directly determines the potential stability and measurement accuracy of the reference electrode.

Core Functions & Characteristics

Stable Liquid Junction Potential – The porous structure of the ceramic frit allows the internal electrolyte (e.g., KCl solution) to seep out at an extremely slow, constant rate, establishing stable ion exchange with the external solution. This creates a consistent and reproducible liquid junction potential, which is fundamental for accurate measurements.
Physical Isolation & Protection – Acting as a microporous barrier, the frit prevents rapid mixing and contamination between the internal electrolyte and the external solution, maintaining a stable environment inside the electrode. It also blocks external impurities from entering and damaging the internal reference element.
Precision Parameter Control – Performance is governed by two key parameters:

Pore Size: Must allow ion passage while preventing bulk liquid flow. In some designs, pore sizes are required to be below 2.5 μm, and even below 1.5 μm for high-precision applications.
Porosity: Affects the seepage/leakage rate and can be tailored to specific application requirements.

Material Selection & Applications

Material Selection – The dominant materials are alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia (ZrO2), with silicon carbide (SiC) also used in some cases. These materials offer excellent chemical inertness, wear resistance, and biocompatibility, enabling them to withstand corrosion from most acids, bases, and test samples.
